Scientific Field Sketching

  • Hall of Science, Whitman College 802 East Isaacs Avenue Walla Walla, WA, 99362 United States (map)

Enhance your scientific observation skills through drawing. Join us for an introductory workshop on scientific illustration and field sketching under the guidance of Heidi Chapin. During the workshop, Heidi will introduce students to new drawing techniques that will help them achieve accurate representations of their subject matter using skills as an observer of the world. Together, students will start with the basics by remembering how to see the world around them with intensity. Students will then spend time observing and drawing natural history specimens from the Whitman Teaching Collections. Specimens will include birds, plants, insects and fossils.

This class is best suited for those aged 12 and older. Previous experience with drawing is not needed and all artistic abilities are welcomed.

Registered students will be equipped with a journaling kit. Each kit includes a Super Deluxe Mixed Media Journal, a Ticonderoga pencil, a basic ball point pen and a Pigma Micron 005 Pen. Students are welcome to bring their own colored pencils or watercolors, however, no specific teaching will cover those techniques.

This event is supported by the Whitman College Science Outreach program.

Registration closes 3 days in advance.

Contact Alexandra James at (509) 525-3136 or alex@bmlt.org for more information.
