Trip Overview:
Blues Crew will clear and improve the Rock Hill Trail at Dayton, a lovely 1.4-mile loop hiking trail above the Touchet River Valley. The Rock Hill Trail is a popular spot for hikers and dog-walkers, and the trail hosts deer and other wildlife just steps from downtown Dayton. Blues Crew invites local community volunteers to join and adopt this trail.
Be a part of this exciting volunteer opportunity! We'll have fun, work hard and make a difference. No experience is necessary.
Volunteer work to accomplish:
Cut back brush to create a minimum 6-foot-wide trail corridor
Widen and level the tread to 24 inches
Improve slope and design to shed water and improve safety
Trim trees
What it takes to do this work party:
No experience is necessary—bring a great attitude to work with a team! Blues Crew leaders will provide training and tools as needed.
Expect to be physically active at your own pace for up to 3.5 hours each day on uneven terrain. Work includes: frequent bending and lifting to use tools and remove materials; Loading and moving a wheelbarrow to transport and spread bark chips
Follow all safety protocols and instructions given by crew leaders. Wear personal protective equipment as directed
Recommended for ages 14 and older; participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult with a signed parental consent form.
At this time, all Blues Crew volunteers are asked to certify that they have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19
Trip Notes:
Walla Walla volunteers can meet at 12:15 p.m. at Cascade Farm & Outdoor, 598 N. Wilbur Avenue in the Eastgate Plaza to carpool to the work party location. All participants will congregate at the Rock Hill Trailhead, located within the Port of Columbia Rock Hill Industrial Park, 1 Port Way, Dayton. Restrooms will be available during the event at the Port offices.

SUNDAY, MAY 1
12:15 pm - Walla Walla volunteers: meet at Cascade Farm & Outdoor Store parking lot at the corner of Melrose and N Wilbur in Eastgate, Walla Walla. We will carpool/caravan
1:00 pm - Meet at trailhead in Dayton. Tailgate safety meeting and work overview
1:00-4:45 pm - Trail work
5:00 pm - Work review and celebration
What to wear:
Boots – no sneakers or sandals
Long pants and long-sleeved shirt
Rain gear
Work gloves and eye protection (glasses, sunglasses)
Ticks can be present: bring DEET for self, Permethrin for clothes
What to bring:
Lightweight day pack
Water bottle
Warm clothing for wet/cold weather
Sunscreen
Snacks
Blues Crew Supplied: Safety gear, first aid kit, hard hat, tools
