Join BMLT and North Fork John Day Watershed Council (NFJDWC) in restoring vital habitat for salmon, steelhead, and more at BMLT's first purchased property, Phipps Meadow.
Nestled in scenic and rural Grant County, Oregon, lies Phipps Meadow—a refuge spanning 1.58 miles of the headwaters of the Middle Fork John Day River. This habitat teems with life, providing a critical haven for native fish species, including wild spring Chinook salmon, Mid-Columbia summer steelhead, bull trout, redband trout, pacific lamprey, and many others.
The segment of the river that passes through Phipps Meadow needs help and future large-scale restoration efforts. A crucial step in restoration we can take today is safeguarding riparian vegetation against overgrazing by wild ungulates and trespassing cattle. With partner support from the NFJDWC and the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, BMLT plans to install riparian plant enclosures along portions of the river to protect and support the growth of riparian vegetation, such as willows and aspen.
This volunteer work party will be led by BMLT and NFJDWC. Work activities include lifting and carrying enclosure materials, post pounding, wire cutting, and fastening fences together. The work environment will involve uneven terrain, full sun, and warm temperatures. Due to the nature of the property, the majority of work will need to be done by foot rather than by vehicle.
Be a part of this exciting volunteer opportunity! We'll have fun, work hard and make a difference. No experience is necessary.
