Ecosystems + Geology hike series: Juniper Dunes Wilderness

Spend the day at the Juniper Dunes Wilderness with geology professor Bob Carson and naturalist Mike Denny.

Spanning over 7,140 acres, Juniper Dunes Wilderness is one of the two largest ergs (dune fields) in Washington state. The prevailing southwesterly winds transported sand toward the Palouse Hills from the Pasco Basin to form the desert oasis. During the trip, learn about this unique landscape, including how the eolian bedforms are at three different scales: transverse draas, parabolic and longitudinal dunes, and ripples. The dunes are also home to grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and juniper trees that date back 150 years.
