The City of John Day purchased the Oregon Pine Mill property in 2017 to create an 80-acre innovation center in the heart of the city. The former mill property will be reclaimed and revitalized into the John Day Rural Innovation Gateway, a location that integrates community, technology, education and commerce with a focus on rural innovation and rural value creation.
The first phase of that development is the city’s new commercial greenhouse for regional food security and hydroponic crop growth. Tour the greenhouse and get a behind-the-scenes look at the city’s plan for using 100% reclaimed water for food production, and learn about hydroponic growing systems.
